Curriculum

The teaching strategies at Woodrow Preschool at Memorial Park include The Creative Curriculum™, one of the nation's most widely used pre-K curricula. It is comprehensive and research-based and features exploration and discovery as a way of learning. We also utilize the Handwriting without Tears Curriculum and Ages & Stages Assessments

In the spring and summer, we teach the children about gardening. They start their plants from the seed inside and are responsible for watering and caring for them. Part of our teaching includes Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM), and we have invested in KODO™ educational products, including Maker Station, Magnetic Wall, Chalk Spinner, and Light Table.

In addition to the curriculum, planned into the day’s schedule is a variety of inside and outside play time, lunch (parent-provided), snack and rest times, and kids’ choices for both learning and fun.

Many enhancements have been made to our Discovery areas. Developing a scientific disposition toward learning comes naturally with environments that foster focused play and self-directed investigation. These areas invite curiosity and close examination, helping children develop essential processing skills.  Open-ended materials encourage children to ask questions, seek out information, and test solutions to problems that arise during the course of play.

We do walking field trips to the library, Plummer Pool, Burnham Park, a bakery, the fire station, Sylvania Historical Museum, and other educational and enjoyable locations. We also have special visits to the Preschool, such as from the ice cream truck, a librarian, and a dentist, to name a few.

We include families by asking them to participate in special events, including Open House, Grandparent’s Day, Holiday Parties, a Holiday Show, Muffins for Moms, Donuts for Dads, field trips, and Graduation.
